Abstract

The history of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University
reflects the main stages of the origin and development of the specialty “pediatric surgery” in our country. Outstanding
pediatric surgeons who have worked in the clinic and at the department since 1905 have created a powerful scientific
and practical foundation for the emergence of such an extraordinary pediatric surgeon and organizer as Giray Bayirov.
Giray Bayirov is one of the most famous pediatric surgeons in our country and abroad.
When preparing the article for the first issue of the Bairov Journal, archival materials of the Bairov Department of Pediatric
Surgical Diseases and the Museum of Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University were used. Giray Bayirov
(1922–1999) was an outstanding pediatric surgeon, the founder of the Leningrad School of Pediatric Surgery, and the
author of numerous surgical methods for the treatment of congenital and urgent pathology in children. G.A. Bayirov
graduated from the Saratov Medical Institute in 1943 and immediately went to the front, was awarded two orders and
medals. After the Great Patriotic War, he worked as a pediatric surgeon at the polyclinic, hospital No. 19 named after
K.A. Rauhfus, the Turner Research Institute in Leningrad. In 1949 Professor A.V. Shatsky invited him to the Department
of Pediatric Surgery at the Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute (SPb GMU). The “Bairov era” for pediatric surgery begins.
G.A. Bairov is a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor, author of numerous monographs
and articles on pediatric surgery, headed the Department of Pediatric Surgery from 1951 to 1992. It was during this
period that the fields of pediatric surgery were emerging: neonatal surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric vertebrology,
anesthesiology, pediatric traumatology and orthopedics, urology and other specializations were developing.
The monographs by G.A. Bairov have been the reference books of pediatric surgeons throughout the country for many
years and have not lost their relevance.
The Pediatric University cherishes the memory of Giray Bayirov, and on the initiative of the staff and administration,
in 2018, the Department of Pediatric Surgery was named after G.A. Bayirov.
